Just Another Training Course? – Dan O

One of our fantastic learners from the Walsall Returneeship, decided to write a poem about his time with us over the 12 days. Thankfully Dan, allowed us to capture this for everyone who wasn’t there to witness it! Please watch the video below to see his delivery of his poem – Just Another Training Course?

Just Another Training Course?

We didn’t sign up for this
We expected:
Boring slides, monotonous tutors
Trapped in a classroom, back to skool
Just a different set of walls to stare at
Instead…
We found video equipment, stills cameras, microphones
Technology left, right and centre
We were going to do the One show, they said
Us, they said
We were thrown in at the deep end
Sink or swim. And boy, did we swim.
We released our potential
Out and about, lugging our equipment
The controlled chaos of writing, filming, editing
These brave ones picked up devices they had never used before
And got stuck in
Working in the background, the researchers
Poured over laptops, mining information
Facts and stories about our home town
The bravest stood in front of the cameras
Staring down the eye of the lens
Did I say swim? We built a boat and sailed
We released our potential
After the manic panic, we settle down to something more mundane
Your table has a number…
(I am not a table number; I am a free man…)
..We were formed into fantastic collectives, teams made up of
universes, dreams, Outlanders (RIP, table3)
Untouchables, and a number of women and Them
Every day a new quiz and opportunities for points
And what do points mean? …Well, you get my drift.
It’s every table for itself, you got to root for your team.
But we’re all winners here

Just Another Training Course?

We released our potential
The usual crowd are here, the workers, the shirkers,
The nervous and the lurkers
Naysayers and class clowns with their
“Can I have some points please?
We weathered tests and challenges
And book, books, books to fill in
But all the time we were learning
Our classroom became a boardroom as we started our own ventures:
We had Mobile Motorbike Mechanics, Rugged Robotic Lawnmowers,
Dedicated Doggy Daycare Centres and Active Aquatic Aquariums
We built our empires on good practice and the proper policies
We released our potential
We got to grips with our IT demons
Bright faces clustered around laptops
Hesitantly punching keys and trying our best
Hoping the mouse wouldn’t run away
But we got through it
We joined the information superhighway
Headed for parts unknown
(Well at least the parts with emails and E-Assessors in)
And slowly, we built our portfolio
The CV’s (when they eventually all arrived)
Were polished up bright and shiny
(For the record, this poem is only two pages long)
Cover letters helped us add that extra sparkle
Our interview techniques were dusted down
And given a coat of paint
We were ready to release our potential upon the world.
We were ready to release our potential upon the world.
We….are ready
