It is difficult for anyone fresh out of university and looking for work to be successful in finding a job and Danyaal tells me about the challenge he personally had to face amidst the chaos of the Covid 19 pandemic. Danny explains that he had graduated from university last year after studying Sports Science. For 3 years he had been employed as a steward at Leeds United Football Club until the first lockdown, due to the pandemic, forced the stadium to close and left Danny unemployed.
Always the optimist, he started searching for and applying for jobs, but after being unsuccessful in two interviews he wanted to understand where he was going wrong and improve on his weaknesses to eventually be successful in gaining employment.
As Danny was put onto Universal Credit his work coach, Christine, made all efforts to help and made him aware of courses that were on offer to him. Keen to move forward, Danny was subsequently put into contact with Release Potential.
Initially, as Danny was keen to understand the job application system better, he enrolled onto his first course covering employability in general, focusing on how to find jobs in a successful way. The course also helped give guidance on how to present yourself at an interview. The first day of the first course Danny felt rather intimidated as he had never been on a Zoom meeting previously and so he was nervous and conscious of the others on the course. He soon settled into the positive environment that was created by everyone.
Once he completed his first course, Danny immediately started looking for retail work and at the same time started a customer service course. Danny hoped this second course would help him gain a better background into retail work and how to interact with customers.
Reflecting on the outcomes of completing both courses Danny tells me he will continue to use various methods explained over the courses especially on how to deal with different customers. Danny is also confident that he now understands his rights as an employee.
Proudly, Danny goes on to say that he has also successfully gained employment at B&Q as a stock assistant and credits this to the guidance and advice he received throughout his time with Release Potential.
For the time being, Danny is happy to continue working in retail where he is gaining valuable work experience. He will continue to aspire to one day work in a sports environment.
Danny would like to encourage those who are thinking about taking up an opportunity to go on a course like this, he says “the tutors and others involved in running the courses are very approachable and friendly and that overall it is a positive experience”.
