Mohammed was having a hard time finding employment during the pandemic, and his work coach told him about the Startship course as it was a good opportunity to gain some qualifications that would assist in the search. Thanks to his time on the course, gaining skills and getting a much needed motivational push, Mohammed was able to find full time employment! We would like to congratulate Mohammed and wish him best going forward!
What were you doing before you started the programme?
I had attended Birmingham Metropolitan College and studied Media and Graphic Design. After completing, I attended University of Arts, London for a year but due to unforeseen circumstances needed to leave. I did some warehousing work, picking and packing, and then worked as a waiter in restaurant for a year. When Covid happened, some staff were let go including me. I was unemployed, trying to find jobs which was hard, especially during the first year of the pandemic.
How did you find out about the training?
My Work Coach, Jenna told me about the course. She explained it was a good opportunity to gain some more qualifications and it would help finding a job.
Why did you decide to join?
I wanted to gain some more qualifications that would help me. I also liked the prospect of meeting employers which was arranged as part of the course. I just thought, why not!
What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
The first two days were really fun, it was more than I expected. Neil and the tutors were all different characters. There were different roles available as part of the team building activity. I did some camera work and editing which my experience in media helped with. Neil and the tutors were brilliant. The course was informative, I Iearned more about the world of IT, and gained some new knowledge. It was refreshing to study new things in IT, and this helped me with my job I went on to gain. I’m more comfortable using It as a result.
Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
I enjoyed it more than I expected to! The course exceeded my expectations.
What are you doing now?
I’m working in a Kickstart role as a Broker and Administrator for Simply Commercial Ltd, an insurance company. My role includes sending quotes and policies to clients, helping to deal with claims, speaking to insurance companies, general administration, phone calls and emails. Each day is a mix of activities. I’m also going to be helping with marketing activities and the design of the website.
What impact has the training had on your life?
I’m employed now! Without joining the course, I don’t think I would have pushed myself as hard to find work. The course prepared me for interview and the opportunity to come face to face with employers and show who I am.
What are your plans for the future?
Simply Commercial Ltd have offered me a full-time post once my Kickstart completes, so I’m staying on! I understand what I need to do to try to progress. I’m considering taking specific insurance qualifications to help improve my prospects.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
Do it! It made such a difference for me. Rather staying at home searching for work, it got me into a routine, and I was surrounded by other people also wanting the best for themselves. It pushed me further. Without the course I don’t think I would have the job I have now. I’m more than happy I joined the course.
