Read on to hear more about Tapiwa’s story!

What were you doing before you started the programme?
For most of my working life, I have been a Healthcare Assistant. This has been a varied role through an agency which led to work in a variety of establishments including nursing homes, hospitals, and mental health care settings over a fifteen-year period. I also worked for an events company in Walsall helping to organise weddings, parties, and christenings. I had been unemployed for about a year and a half before joining the course.

How did you find out about the training?
My Work Coach at Molineux House Job Centre in Wolverhampton brought it to my attention and encouraged me to consider enrolling. I also received some information about the course to my journal.

Why did you decide to join?
I had been thinking about doing something different for a while. I had worked in care for such a long time, I was ready for a change. I was also dealing with some health issues which were making me reconsider things. Providing care can be a physically demanding role. The opportunities that the Civil Service could provide seemed both interesting and varied.

What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
Even though the course was delivered using Zoom, the classroom experience provided a friendly and inclusive atmosphere. As old as I am, I didn’t think, ‘What am I doing on this course!’ I met lots of different people, and during the course I gained in confidence and was happy to speak up and ask questions. The tutors made me feel at ease and realise I could get a different job in an administrative capacity, which was more of the type of change as I was looking for. I didn’t expect to get as far as I am now! Being in the classroom with everyone helped me become more able to express myself. I also enjoyed the support with the jobhunting process and interview skills, it all helped.

Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
The course has contributed to building my confidence. I thought you needed to have lots of experience and qualifications, and so was uncertain if I could get a job like this. The encouragement from the course tutors gave me the boost I needed to apply for jobs different to those I had previously held. The IT course also helped me to brush up on the skills I thought I had!

What are you doing now?
I’m now employed as an NHS Ward Clerk at West Park Rehabilitation Hospital in Wolverhampton. I’m enjoying it even though it felt a bit like being in at the deep end! There is lots of support from the team I work with. I carry out general administrative work, including being the first point of contact for the Ward, answering calls, liaising with doctors and nurses, contacting family members, and admitting and discharging patients.

What impact has the training had on your life?
I think the training has helped me to become a well-rounded individual. I have developed a positive frame of mind and am confident to do tasks at work.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m focused on doing a good job in my new role for now. I’ll have to wait and see what opportunities develop, but I hope I will be able to apply for a higher band position when the opportunity is right. I’m also hoping to take part in opportunities to do some further training linked to my role.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
Do it! If you think you can’t do it, you can! There is lots of help and support on the course. It has helped me to push myself further. It will boost your skills and confidence.
