Kelly McClean – Civil Service Learner

Kelly had been studying Counselling & Psychology when she found out about the Release Potential course. Thinking that the course would be well suited to assist with the content she was doing in her studies. Finding the course to help increase her confidence, Kelly has been able to secure a position as a Work Coach within the DWP with plans to complete her studies and incorporate the counselling studies into her progression!

What were you doing before you started the programme?
I was a mobile hairdresser part time whilst studying Counselling & Psychology with an Adult Education Centre before I also embarked on training with Release Potential.

How did you find out about the training?
I found out about the training available through my work coach Elisa via the Job Centre.

Why did you decide to join?
My work coach suggested that based on my current studies, the course with Release Potential would be helpful and I would be well suited to the content. My Work Coach Elisa had secured her role also via doing the course with Release Potential.

What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
The training really helped massively with confidence. I struggled with academic self doubt. Doing the course helped me understand my capabilities are stronger than I originally thought. More confident in public speaking now. Previously uncomfortable speaking in groups and speaking openly. I was encouraged to speak and feel much more comfortable with it now. Worried I would look silly when speaking up but I was encouraged to overcome this and the more the course progressed, I became reassured, and got approval via class colleagues and the tutor.

Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
Just confidence really when speaking or giving answers in group settings. Constantly encouraged to reply and even if the answer was incorrect, would fully understand how without feeling inadequate.

What are you doing now?
Work Coach – A/O – DWP

What impact has the training had on your life?
The training has had a massive impact. Confidence has soared in areas where it wasn’t previously there. Lots more self belief and also helped me secure the dream job.

What are your plans for the future?
I’d really hope to incorporate my counselling studies into future roles for progression. Also plan to continue with studying on a part time basis alongside my job.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
Do it. You will definitely much better for participating. What you can get out of it is fantastic.
