Ruth had been working as a teacher when life events meant it was time for a change in career. Finding out about the course from her Work Coach, Ruth decided the training would be a good match to help make that career change and get into the Civil Service. Now working within the DWP, Ruth has found the training to have helped her with the whole application process! Congratulations on the position, Ruth!

What were you doing before you started the programme?
I was previously a Teacher and also worked in the Youth Justice Service field. Following some personal challenges involving sickness, I made a decision to have a change of role and was able to work from home. Due to a change in the role and requirements around full time working I embarked on the training to top up my skills.

How did you find out about the training?
I approached a Work Coach via the Job Centre as I’d heard about the course after enquiring about CV support via the National Careers Service. It was recommended to me as a good match to help support me with some new learning.

Why did you decide to join?
I felt I needed to find a job outside my previous profession where I could still be engaged with lots of people and use my skills.

What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
The course gave me all the steps I’d need to apply for the Civil Service. I learnt so much about every stage of the process and how to manage it. I’m not sure if I hadn’t been on the course if I’d have been brave enough to apply for anything.

Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
Just a few challenges in conjunction with my health and feeling tired due to the length of the days.

What are you doing now?
I’ve secured a part time role with DWP which is fantastic.

What impact has the training had on your life?
The best bit is that it has given me a job. I had no idea what the future held and the training has led me into a new role I really wanted.

What are your plans for the future?
Short term plans are to enjoy my new role, learn as much as I can and see where it leads after the 12 month contract.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
If you’re keen to work for the Civil Service, definitely ‘Do It’. The course is made for you.
