Cerys Thompson – Civil Service Learner

Being unsuccessful in her search for employment, Cerys decided she wanted to enhance her skills and gain a second chance at some education opportunities. During her time on the course Cerys has found her confidence to have grown, and has gone from unsuccessful job searches to gaining permanent employment as a Customer Service Representative! Congratulations, Cerys!

What were you doing before you started the programme?
I was out of work and had been unsuccessful with previous job searching.

How did you find out about the training?
I was recommended the course by my Work Coach Harvey who gave some details about the times the courses ran, but he was unsure which course it would be I’d be accepted for. My course decision was made by Release Potential based on my responses when we chatted about what the course involved, my experience and interests and what would hep me the most.

Why did you decide to join?
I felt being on the course would really enhance my skills. I had limited qualifications from school and College and felt this would give me a second chance. I also wanted to prove to myself I was capable.

What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
The training was a real confidence booster. The assignment work I was given was great and despite being given feedback to make some amendments, this still helped because I knew where I wasn’t getting it quite right first time round and could then focus on how to improve. It really helped me as a person. I became much better at speaking openly in a group setting and I felt much more comfortable doing this.

Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
Nervousness initially played a big factor, but after Jaleesa my Tutor gave me feedback, it really pushed me to overcome this.

What are you doing now?
I’m working as a Customer Service Representative for Nationwide Building Society.

What impact has the training had on your life?
The biggest impact of the training has been my increased confidence. I’m not uncomfortable speaking up now and would do this without hesitation.

What are your plans for the future?
I would love to progress into a more senior role. In the future. I’ve now got the stability of a permanent job and this will support in my future personal life goals.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
I’d encourage them to go for it. You have an initial few days to decide if the course is right for you. It’s a real asset for self improvement and development – topping up your skills. It’s also a great addition to your CV to show your ongoing learning and gives another dimension to any conversations around what you were doing whilst unemployed.
