Yugendhra Naidoo – Civil Service Learner

Yugendhra found out about the training when he saw a presentation at his Job Centre from someone who had previously done the training themselves. Hoping it would open the same doors and present the same opportunities for him, Yugendhra decided to join. Despite some initial trouble with writing skills, Yugendhra was able to overcome the problem with the extra support that the delivery team were able to offer, which allowed Yugendhra to develop his skills and improve his ability in writing job applications. So much so that since completing the training, Yugendhra has gone on to gain employment as a Compliance Officer with HMRC! Congratulations, Yugendhra!

What were you doing before you started the programme?
I was unemployed for around 3 months before starting on the course with Release Potential.

How did you find out about the training?
I found out about the availability of the course due to qualifying for attendance at a 50plus walk in session at the Job Centre. As part of the conversations, I was notified there was additional learning available to me based on my age.

Why did you decide to join?
One of the Job Centre presenters indicated they had attended a programmed that gave them access to Civil Service roles which had resulted in them securing their job in the Job Centre. I felt that by participating, this may give me the same opportunities too.

What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
I was quite astounded at the level and volume of content that was covered. The details shared were excellent and really supported me in my search for employment. Great credit to the presenters/Tutors who were really knowledgable and insightful. They had lots of experience and insight which was shared during the course.

Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
I struggled with some of my writing skills. I received so much new information to inform and support me in how to write effectively when making a Civil Service application using a prescribed approach based on what I’d been taught.

What are you doing now?
I’m working as a Compliance Officer with HMRC.

What impact has the training had on your life?
I think the biggest impact has been a sense of self worth and value. The training helped me appreciate what skills I had that were honed and fine tuned and that they are relevant both in my new job but also on a personal level.

What are your plans for the future?
Following completion of my initial probation meeting, I have already made enquiries about progression opportunities following the next 12 – 18 months in my role.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
I would say you should absolutely do it, even if uncertain. Any gaps you feel you aren’t confident in can be filled with the support of people from various backgrounds, skills and abilities. Be open to learning and asking for advice and guidance when you need it.
