Ethan Cartwright – Civil Service learner

After working in hospital security, Ethan found himself unemployed and searching for a new position. During his search for work, Ethan had already been applying to the Civil Service but was unfortuntely not having any success. So when Ethan met one of the Release Potential team at a local event and found out about the training, he knew it was the right step for him to take. With the help of the information and support gained while on the course, Ethan has been able to secure a role as a Case Manager within the DWP, and aspires to become a Work Coach! Best of luck, Ethan!

What were you doing before you started the programme?
I was unemployed after previously working in hospital security.

How did you find out about the training?
The Link Jobs bulletin for Walsall, shared details of local events which were happening where employers and training providers were promoting what was available. One of the attendees there was Release Potential who were sharing details of their courses.

Why did you decide to join?
I had previously been applying for Civil Service roles before without success. I was keen to get a new qualification, gain insight into how I could succeed within the Civil Service and receive lots of new information that the course indicated would be covered.

What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
The training was really well organised and I got lots of support. The content was great, sharing lots of information about the steps included when engaging with the Civil Service and also what approach to take at each step of the way. The delivery was also supported by daily Masterclasses sharing extra information.

Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
No, not really.

What are you doing now?
I’ve secured a role as a Case Manager A/O with DWP.

What impact has the training had on your life?
The training has allowed me to join the Civil Service and got me into employment. Financially it’s also a real asset. I have also secured further support with my disability including assessments, adjustments to make sure I am taken care of and supported appropriately, including monitoring of my hybrid working situation.

What are your plans for the future?
My overall goal is to become a Work Coach. I will use the experience and opportunity to help me on the path to success. The ability to access roles from an internal perspective is really beneficial.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
I’d encourage them to go for it. There is intense work involved in the course but the benefits outweigh all of this.
