Maryam had been been out of employment for a length of time so that she could act as a carer for family, and decided it was time to get back into work. After a conversation with a member of Release Potential, Maryam joined one of our Coaching and Mentoring courses, and now that she has completed plans to continue her learning journey and pursue the next levels of Coaching and Mentoring qualifications! Best of luck, Maryam
What were you doing before you started the programme?
I had been working with the University of Birmingham previously but left to take care of my daughter who has an underlying health condition. I was unemployed just under 5 years. I also continued to try to keep my skills up to date with any learning available.
How did you find out about the training?
My Work Coach Sameem from Birmingham – Selly Oak Job Centre recommended the training to me after I was referred to him via his colleague Mustafa. Mustafa was supporting me with a CV review and thought the course would be a great way forward.
Why did you decide to join?
After the first conversation with Christian at Release Potential, and learning more about the course, where he took the time to talk to me and learn about my skills. He established I would be good for the Coaching & Mentoring Level 3 course. I was a little disheartened before the conversation and his reassurances really helped.
What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
The training has really helped. Combined with past experience and the gap from not working, my knowledge was upskilled based on the content of the Coaching & Mentoring qualification and learning. The new skills I secured alongside the information shared in the Masterclasses was excellent and was commented on when I was going through the application process for my current role. The Master Class information and sessions are a great reference point and easy to access both during and after the course, as well as being able to re attend if I wanted to revisit the content.
Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
My confidence levels were low. After being in a period of unemployment, I needed to learn how to build myself up and feel able, a little bit daring at times and also learn how to take feedback constructively and use it to my advantage. I am fairly introvert, but this changed, and felt much more confident in sharing my thoughts and views. The sessions really showed me how I could flourish and what I had to offer.
What are you doing now?
I’m working as an Administrator/Receptionist at a Grammar School in Birmingham.
What impact has the training had on your life?
The impact has been great. Especially completing a qualification at a Level 3 during which I wondered if I could succeed. It’s really prompted me to consider further learning and is also helping in my new role when dealing with students. Especially where some of the older groups need direction and guidance which I’m now able to give.
What are your plans for the future?
I’d love to pursue a Level 4 in Coaching & Mentoring and maybe a consider a Degree. I have also been promised some progression within my current role after a period of time.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
Make sure you join. Take in what’s being shared and at least learn about the course before making a decision about if it’s right for you. The learning and support you will get will make you realise it’s a great opportunity.
