Stephen Houston – Coaching and Mentoring Learner

Wanting to get a Coaching and Mentoring qualification under his belt, when Stephen was introduced to the programme by hiw Work Coach, he knew it would be what he needed to help achieve that goal. Stephen has said that he found the course to help with confidence in communicating with people as well as improving his planning and organisational skills. Using these new gained skills, Stephen has gone on to gain a position as a Business Development Manager, but plans to one day focus on a more coaching based role, and we wish Stephen the best of luck with his plans!

What were you doing before you started the programme?
I was unemployed for around 3 months after being employed for just under a year after as a Business Development Manager for a Health & Safety and Employment Law Specialist.

How did you find out about the training?
I was introduced to the training via my Work Coach, Carol from the Wolverhampton – Molineux House Job Centre.

Why did you decide to join?
I wanted to get the Coaching & Mentoring Level 3 qualification under my belt. I felt this would help me to move forward and act as a top up to previous Coaching & Mentoring learning. I have done some Coaching & Mentoring work previously.

What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
I thought the training was intense, thorough and challenging at times. The Tutors were really precise and specific with transparent communication which was key when learning.

Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
No not really. Waiting for feedback from work submitted/assignments was unnerving at times as I was keen to see the supporting comments. I wasn’t always sure when updates would be received based on being part of a group, but the feedback was helpful was when it was received.

What are you doing now?
I’m working as a Business Development Manager with a Chartered Accountants.

What impact has the training had on your life?
The training has provided lots more confidence when dealing with people. My planning and organisational skills have improved and given an insight into how to plan and detail well, so I’m able to provide a better approach for work/schedules to clients. My approach is much more enhanced with clarity around expectations.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m considering a different strategy moving forward. I will maybe focus on the coaching side of things more, with less pressure, better quality of life and good stability. I’m also going to consider Self Employment.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
You need to give it a try. Go through with it, learn from it, get involved. You won’t know what you’re missing and it’s there to add a further string to your bow to enhance skills, confidence, knowledge and experience. Great meeting others on the course to learn about their experiences too.
