What were you doing before you started the programme?
I had been unemployed for around 4 years after completing a Degree in Health & Social Care.

How did you find out about the training?
Whilst attending my Job Centre, Birmingham Central/Summerhill, my work coach Mia told me about the Civil Service Coaching & Mentoring course and it sounded really interesting.

Why did you decide to join?
Mia my Work Coach had previously done the course. She said it was a brilliant opportunity which had helped her secure her role and held Release Potential in very high regard. She spoke so passionately and positively about what it was like and what she’d got out of it. I wanted to consider the details she shared first, but decided a day later to enrol.

What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
The training was absolutely fantastic. I’ve done quite a bit of training both while working and unemployed, and the Release Potential training was the best by far. I don’t think you could successfully apply for a role without the Civil Service training. The Coaching & Mentoring element was also great, and enhanced my knowledge around how to coach and mentor effectively.

Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
I wasn’t optimistic around finding work as it had been such a long time. I’d been isolated while unemployed and felt daunted at the prospect of engaging with others and being on screen. I was uncomfortable being seen and participating in discussions with new people.

What are you doing now?
I’m working as an Admin Officer with Birmingham – Erdington Job Centre for DWP.

What impact has the training had on your life?
This has had a huge impact. I’m more able to do stuff with my children, have a steady income and feel positive about being back in a work setting. My family are so pleased for me and feel proud of what I have achieved.

What are your plans for the future?
I’d love to keep going for as long as I can within the Civil Service being the best I can.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
Just go for it. Don’t think about it. It will change your life for certain.
I love sharing details about the course and encouraging others to attend so they don’t miss out on the opportunity. My son is currently attending the course as it sounded so positive.
