Neelam Kumari – Civil Service Learner

Neelam found out about the programme via a messafge in their Universal Credit journal, and given a previous interest in the Civil Service decided to reach out to Release Potential about joining. Neelam wasn’t sure if they had the confidence or skills needed to apply for or progress in the Civil Service, but after their time on the course found their confidence growing and realised they have what’s needed to take on the Civil Service applications! Working now as a Business Support Officer with their local council, Neelam is hoping to enhance their career. Best of luck, Neelam!

What were you doing before you started the programme?
I’d been unemployed for around 7 months before commencing on the Release Potential training.

How did you find out about the training?
I was notified via my Universal Credit journal about the Civil Service training being available to me.
I reached out directly to Release Potential to make further enquires and got enrolled.

Why did you decide to join?
I saw the course was for Civil Service and I was already interested in this type of sector. I’d previously applied for Civil Service roles before without success and thought what I would learn on the training would be really beneficial.

What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
The training I received was really helpful and it was great to engage with a Tutor who shared lots of insight around everything involved so I could not only apply appropriately, but also in line with an area of the Civil Service that suited me. The tuition support and sessions were really useful, the tasks etc really supported me with how to succeed. The course contents covered Application, Behaviour Statements. Personal Statements and various tests. I secured knowledge that I wouldn’t have had before. I received lots of valuable information and was shown opportunities which were supported by great guidance to help me progress.

Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
The only real challenge was around confidence and knowing whether I had the skills to succeed. With support and guidance my confidence increased. The extra support I received was really beneficial.

What are you doing now?
I’m working as a Business Support Officer with the Council

What impact has the training had on your life?
After being unemployed, my confidence was affected. The tasks, reading and writing element on the course really benefited me and gave structure and focus, whilst also gaining knowledge.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m now in a position to use my existing job and skills to enhance my career route. This will hopefully in time lead to other opportunities in different roles that align with mine presently.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
Give it a go. Once you’ve started you’ll quickly realise if it’s right for you. The chance to do it will show you how worthwhile it can be.
