James was informed about the training via his Work Coach after he enquired about SWAP programmes. After finding out that the course would assist in searching and applying for work that he was already looking for, James immediately decided to join! James found that the course structure really helped him balance the various things going on in his life such as becoming a new parent! Speaking of balance, James was able to take the things he learned on the course and secure a hybrid position within the DWP that allows him to continue that balance! Congratulations, James!
What were you doing before you started the programme?
I had been unemployed since December 2023.
How did you find out about the training?
During one of my appointments at the Job Centre, I made enquires about the SWAPS programme. There were a couple of options suggested by my Work Coach, one for outside work and also one from Release Potential about Civil Service which I decided on immediately.
Why did you decide to join?
I was feeling pretty desperate and had already received some declines from applications I had made. My Work Coach had given great insight into what the course involved, the qualification I could secure, and how this would assist in working for the Public Sector which aligned with what I was looking for, as well as added security. I felt this enhanced any chances I would have.
What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
I enjoyed the training but would have loved it to be face to face. The course was really good and certainly didn’t feel like I was staring at a screen all day. My confidence was really enhanced as I had previously had knock backs, but I quickly realised the potential I had through the Tutor involvement and being brought out of my shell. The group related really well and this was encouraged throughout the sessions to help us progress.
Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
Until doing the course, I didn’t consider any barriers but actually the course gave insight into other barriers. I personally didn’t have any but could see how others may have had issues. Having recently become a new father, sometimes my time was taken caring for the baby, but I was able to work within this as it was clear when breaks etc would be. It definitely feels like learners circumstances were taken into account when planning the schedule.
What are you doing now?
I’m working for the DWP as an AO. My role is hybrid with the elements of home working alongside office based. This is a great balance.
What impact has the training had on your life?
The training has had a massive impact in terms of feeling more positive about the future. I have loads more confidence which has helped me be accepted into a job within the Civil Service. The course helped me understand and complete all of the tasks associated with applying for a job including the processes that followed. I received very realistic feedback which managed my expectations throughout. I would never have understood any of the levels of roles or Coaching & Mentoring, before starting. This was really informative and the information was almost like the little diamonds to polish my approach.
What are your plans for the future?
Ultimately, this is down to me. I have to continue to work hard and take every opportunity given, to ensure stability and structure to alleviate any pressures. It’d be great later on to become established slightly closer to home. Definitely open to same level jobs but learning new skills in a different job is also appealling. I want to prove I am worth investing time into and can add value to the business.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
Do it. What’s to lose. It’s free and it’s a wonderful opportunity where if you’ve got the appetite to learn something new and the time to do this, then why wouldn’t you. Any potential obstacles can be overcome with the support given, no matter how unnerving it may initially be. Even if you don’t secure a job within the Public Sector it will certainly help outside this. You’ll also make some new acquaintances along the way.
