Finding her voice
Before taking time out of the workplace to raise a family, Jane worked as a waitress. With her family grown, Jane wanted to return to employment but with 20 years out of the workplace, she lacked confidence in her abilities and thought her lack of qualifications could also be preventing her from gaining work. Naturally quiet, it was a challenge to speak in front of other people, particularly groups. It was during a visit to Mexborough job centre that she heard about the Returneeship. Jane decided to give the course a try as she thought she could acquire new skills and qualifications that would aid her job search.
Jane admits she was a bit nervous at the start of the first day but willing to push herself, she volunteered to take part in the omelette challenge. As she spoke in front of other learners and the camera in a supportive and fun environment, her confidence was boosted. Over the course of the first two days she also tried editing and took on the role of floor manager during the filming of the live show.
As floor manager she needed to act confidently and speak loudly and clearly in front of the audience. As she moved into the classroom where she worked towards qualifications, she says she “felt very settled.”
By the end of the course, Jane feels more positive, confident and able to speak up. She is now considering her options but is exploring the charity sector and hopes that she will be able to use the editing skills she gained on the course.
