Jonathan B – Barnsley Returneeship 2018

Returneeship – an experience to be repeated

Jonathan’s employment background included 17 years’ experience in the military, nine years in the prison service and two years at R.E.A.L Education. However, Jonathan’s work became unsuitable and he took redundancy. When applying for work, Jonathan particularly struggled to prove to employers that his experience was applicable and that he was qualified for the position. This led to him being unemployed for over three years.

It was his work coach that recommended the Returneeship. At the start of the Returneeship, Jonathan believed his age was a barrier back into employment. Jonathan liked that the course was tailored to the over 40s, allowing him to work alongside people of a similar age.

Upon commencing the course, Jonathan felt excited and wanted to get stuck in. After being shown the different roles available in the two-day project, Jonathan chose to take part in the omelette challenge, which he thoroughly enjoyed. During the classroom phase, the course uncovered attributes and experience Jonathan had forgotten he had, which allowed him to expand his CV.

Jonathan excelled in ICT and completed Level 2 ICT and this new qualification has given him renewed confidence to achieve his aspirations of part-time work. Reflecting on the Returneeship, Jonathan recommends the course to others in a similar situation and he “would definitely do it all again.”
