Olivia’s calm, curious and caring nature shines through as she tells me about the gap year she took between finishing her 6th form studies and potentially starting University. Whilst studying in the 6th form she had worked for a few hours a week as a receptionist. Upon returning from travelling she had once again started working for a few hours a week. Unfortunately as the lockdown came into place, as a reaction to the pandemic that was sweeping the globe, she soon found herself unemployed.
Olivia felt the need to be kept busy and through her local job centre in Halifax was made aware of courses on offer to her. She was inquisitive about healthcare and so was drawn to the healthcare course offered by Release Potential. When asked how she felt at the beginning of the course she tells me she was “both nervous, as it was my first time using and doing such a thing online through Zoom, and excited as I didn`t know what to expect”.
Olivia really enjoyed the academic side of things especially doing the research projects and communicating with everyone on the course. She states “It was also a great way to be able to interact with others”. Olivia, aware of the limitations to her knowledge, was impressed with the general range of qualifications the course covered and she felt that this meant she was able to keep her options open and learn about various new topics.
Olivia positively tells me that “the course has opened up my options, increased my confidence in talking to people I don’t know and I have generally learnt lots of things”. She continues by saying that “[the course] is good to keep you busy, in a routine and by taking part in a course such as this one you are able to gain or improve a range of basic skills”.
Looking to the future, Olivia is still weighing up her options and deciding whether she wants to study psychology at University. In the meantime she has also been looking into applying to enter the police force. At present she is enjoying working at an Amazon warehouse part-time over the Christmas period.
