Angela heard about the course from her work coach, and felt that taking part in the course would open avenues that she hadn’t previously considered. Read more of Angela’s experience below!
What were you doing before you started the programme?
I was a foster carer for a number of years. I’m also experienced in supporting young people in a variety of care settings. My most recent employment was supporting adults with mental health needs in a residential care setting in London. I moved from London to Birmingham and unfortunately became unemployed in January 2022.
How did you find out about the training?
My Work Coach, Mark, told me about the course. I was getting desperate and asked him what his job was like! I thought I had something to offer in terms of working for the government and helping to give advice and support to people. Mark referred me to Release Potential for more detailed course information.
Why did you decide to join?
I felt that taking part in the course would open another avenue for me that I hadn’t considered previously, simply because I didn’t know about it. In doing the course, I knew I could both learn and achieve a qualification that would help me with my next steps.
What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
The course was an eye-opener! James and the tutors put the course over really well. The support staff were very good, they were accommodating, had good listening skills and patience. All in all, I thought it was managed well online.
Personally, I enjoyed the mock interview which stood out as a good learning experience. I saw during the course there were other employment avenues I could work in. It was also another confidence boost.
Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
I have dyslexia and received lots of help, including support calls both during and after the course. There was a good atmosphere built online, with staff and learners supporting each other. There was also lots of teamwork and reassurance from staff.
What impact has the training had on your life?
I have gained a lot more awareness. Because of skills I had developed previously but not used for a while, I had dormant skills but these have been brought to the fore again. It’s helped me get a job in an area I had not considered previously.
What are your plans for the future?
I’ve been in post since February, so not long. I plan to update my registration as a social worker, which has lapsed. I’m not sure which direction I’ll go in next, but I’ll look for opportunities as the government sets out its priorities. I’m sure I will continue to support young people in the future.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
Go for it. It can only help you learn and do better. Even if you’ve got lots of skills you can always learn more. You can never know enough.
