Benjamin was set on working in Graphic Design after completing a course at college, but felt that he was in need of some additional qualifications and experience to boost his CV. Benjamin’s Work Coach told him about the course and he came along hoping it would help him with his goal, and from what he’s told us since completing the course it sounds like he reached that goal! Read on below to find out what Benjamin has to say about his experience with the Startship programme!
What were you doing before you started the programme?
After studying L3 BTEC Art and Design at Dudley College for two years, I started looking for jobs and liked the idea of working within graphic design. I didn’t have the experience or qualifications needed for someone to employ me based on some initial freelance work I had done and some self-taught skills. I needed something else to help me move this way.
How did you find out about the training?
My Work Coach, Ellie, told me about the course. She thought the experiences and qualifications I would gain on the course would give a boost to my CV. I also met some staff from Release Potential at Dudley Job Centre who gave me some more detail about the course.
Why did you decide to join?
I knew the three qualifications delivered would help me find a job and help me when in a job. I also thought it would be a good confidence booster.
What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
It was good and I thought it was structured well. We were eased into the course with something fun over the first two days. I volunteered for the presenting role for the TV show. The environment created was welcoming and made me want to carry on with the course. Owen, my tutor made sure we understood things and supported each other.
The course helped me to have confidence in my own abilities and get myself out there. The job search skills, CV building and qualifications delivered helped me to be positive. I thought I could sell myself to any company by the end of the course!
Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
I just needed to find work!
What are you doing now?
I’m employed as a Kickstart Junior Graphic Designer with TPSquared and I’m enjoying it. The company is made up of a small staff team which I think has helped. It’s welcoming, supportive and I don’t feel isolated which I think could happen in a large organisation. They have also helped me get my skills up.
What impact has the training had on your life?
We did some job searching on the course, and this helped me find the opportunity I have now with TPSquared. I gained skills I can take with me into any job.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m not sure if I will be kept on yet when my Kickstart placement finishes. Whatever happens, I’m glad they gave me a chance and took me on. They’ve given me everything I need to find another graphic design role.
In the future I might look for some more specific qualifications in graphic design. My ultimate goal is to become a professional freelancer, which I hope will lead to forming my own clothing company. I’ve already got a few things started with this goal in mind!
What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
Why wouldn’t you? I got three good qualifications that helped me find work. There’s no reason not to do the course, and nothing to be put off by. All the support you need is there.
