Ryan thought the course would be a good opportunity to learn new skills and help improve his confidence. Going on from the course to a position as a Commis Chef, we wish Ryan the best of luck going forward! Read on below to hear how he found his experience!
What were you doing before you started the programme?
I attended college and studied hospitality for three years, then I was looking for work and took part in a variety of courses. My first job was gained working at Pizza Express in Stourbridge. After this, I did a Princes Trust Teamwork course and was actively seeking employment before the course with Release Potential.
How did you find out about the training?
My Work Coach Julie, at Stourbridge Job Centre told me about the course and encouraged me to take part.
Why did you decide to join?
I thought it was an opportunity to learn new skills and help improve my confidence.
What did you think of the training? How did it help you?
I enjoyed the way the course was delivered. It was engaging right from the start. During the team activity my role was to do the video editing. I had done some of this before, so I jumped at the chance. The course helped me learn some new skills that are useful in life such as IT and teamwork. The interview skills and techniques part of the course was also helpful, and I enjoyed the opportunity to practice them. I’m feel more confident about moving forward now.
Were there any barriers or obstacles you had to overcome?
Not really, I just needed to try and find work.
What are you doing now?
After the training with Release Potential, I attended Dudley Skills Shop at Merry Hill taking part in a two-week hospitality course leading to Kickstart opportunities with the Copthorne Hotel. I had an interview after the course for a Kickstart placement as a Commis Chef and was successful.
The last six months have been very good. I’ve helped chefs on their sections, with running functions, and whenever needed! I’ve enjoyed preparing food and cooking. The Copthorne has been positive about my progress, and I was delighted to be offered a Commis Chef role after my Kickstart completed.
What impact has the training had on your life?
It’s been a good, positive experience. The course helped with my confidence, to become better qualified and therefore in helping to get the job.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m looking forward to my Commis Chef role, and think I’ll stay with this for now.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about doing the training but wasn’t sure?
Do the course and learn some new skills, they were helpful for me and will help you too.
